What are truck bed cross bars?+
Truck bed cross bars, also called bed bars or a low-profile bed rack, are two horizontal bars that span your pickup bed from rail to rail, sitting just a few inches above it. They carry a cargo basket, bikes, a rooftop tent, kayaks or lumber on top of the bed while the bed floor stays free. XBRS is our version: 6" or 8" tall aluminum T-slot crossbars that fit under most tonneau covers.
What can I carry on XBRS?+
Most everyday loads: a cargo basket for coolers and duffels, bikes on T-slot bike mounts, a low-profile rooftop tent, kayaks, lumber, ladders and recovery boards. Lights, antennas and MOLLE panels mount anywhere along the full-length T-slots. Keep everything on the bars under 800 lb on-road or 400 lb off-road.
Will XBRS work with my tonneau cover?+
With most covers, yes. The Universal Mount gives 3.3" of clearance into the bed rail. Some tri-fold covers, and covers that reach farther into the rail, won't open fully. Have a Retrax XR? How hard is XBRS to install and remove?+
Not hard. XBRS is a no-drill install, so it goes on without drilling into your truck and comes off without leaving holes when you want the full bed back. A Jeep Gladiator needs a Trail Rail, and 2022+ Nissan Frontiers need the Nissan Utili-track installed.
How much weight can XBRS carry, and will it hold a rooftop tent?+
XBRS is rated 800 lb on-road and 400 lb off-road while driving, and 1,500 lb static when parked. Many cross bars are rated around 150 to 300 lb while driving, so XBRS gives you far more headroom for a rooftop tent, a loaded basket or long cargo. With a tent, the 1,500 lb static rating covers you parked with people inside; keep the tent and everything else on the bars under the dynamic rating for how you drive.
Do truck bed cross bars affect gas mileage?+
Very little. XBRS sits below your cab roofline, in the truck's natural wind shadow, so empty low-profile bars typically cost 0 to 1 MPG. Loaded, your gear rides low behind the cab instead of up in the wind, so the impact stays minor compared with gear mounted higher.
Should I choose 6H or 8H?+
XBRS comes 6" tall (6H) or 8" tall (8H). Choose 8H if you want the XBRS Tread MOLLE Plate, which fits 8H only (not Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra); choose 6H for the lowest profile. A full XTR1 bed rack runs 10" to 26".
Will XBRS fit my truck?+

What's included, and what isn't?+
You get the crossbar kit with CNC corner brackets and the mounts for your truck (Universal or Retrax XR on most trucks). It does not include MOLLE plates or top braces. Add the XBRS Tread MOLLE Plate (8H only, not for Chevy/GMC) or top braces when you need them. Other accessories that mount in the XBRS T-slots: XTR Quick Fist Riser Mounts, the XTR Grab Handle Kit and T-Slot Zip Clips.
How is it warrantied, and where is it made?+
The aluminum extrusions and CNC-machined parts carry a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship; powder coat and supplied hardware are covered for two years. XBRS is made in the USA: designed, machined and finished in-house by Xtrusion Overland in Wichita, Kansas. See the full warranty for details.
What's the difference between bed bars and a bed rack?+
Bed bars like XBRS are two low crossbars that span the bed rails. They sit below the cab roofline, add little drag, work with most tonneau covers and cost less, which makes them the better fit for bikes, kayaks, a rooftop tent, a cargo basket and everyday cargo. A full bed rack adds taller uprights and side and top braces for awnings, MOLLE panels, lights and a higher tent, at a higher price and height.
Can I upgrade XBRS to a full bed rack later?+
Yes, if your needs change. Add the XTR1 Alternate Height Kit for your truck, two XTR1 Side/Top Brace Sets and four XTR Off-Road Reinforcement Plates (20°, or 9° for the Jeep Gladiator). The kit replaces the XBRS bars and sets the rack anywhere from 10" to 26" tall; your corner and bed rail brackets stay on. XBRS bar lengths vary, so we don't offer a part that reuses the old bars. An XTR1 can later convert to an XTR3. XBRS isn't made in 13°, so it can't convert to a 13° Soft Topper rack. 2000–2006 Tundra or an 8' long bed? Contact us before ordering upgrade parts.

What are truck bed cross bars?
Truck bed cross bars, also called bed bars, bed crossbars or a low-profile bed rack, are two horizontal bars that span the bed from rail to rail, sitting just a few inches above it. They give you a strong, flat platform for gear on top of the bed (a rooftop tent, kayaks, lumber, a cargo basket) while the bed floor stays free underneath.
They aren't the same as cargo bars, the ratcheting or spring-loaded bars that wedge between the bed walls to keep loads from sliding. Cargo bars brace loads inside the bed; cross bars carry loads above it.

You don't have to be an overlander to use truck bed bars. Here's what XBRS is built to carry:

- Bikes, on bike mounts that slide into the T-slots, so they ride above the bed without a hitch rack.

Truck bed cross bars with a tonneau cover
XBRS works with most tonneau covers. The Universal Mount brackets leave 3.3" of clearance into the bed rail, so most covers still open and close under the bars. Some tri-fold covers, and covers that reach farther into the rail, won't open fully. If you run a Retrax XR retractable cover, choose the Retrax XR Bedcover Mount, which is made for it. Want both? Can bed bars carry a rooftop tent?
Yes. XBRS is rated 1,500 lb static, the number that matters when you're parked with the tent open and people inside. When you're driving, the dynamic ratings apply: 800 lb on-road and 400 lb off-road. Add up the tent and everything else on the bars and stay under the dynamic rating for how you drive.
6" or 8": choosing your XBRS height
XBRS comes 6" tall (6H) or 8" tall (8H). Choose 6H for the lowest profile. Choose 8H if you want the XBRS Tread MOLLE Plate, which fits 8H only and isn't made for Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra trucks. Need more height than that? A full XTR1 runs 10" to 26".
Bed bars vs. a full bed rack
Bed bars like XBRS are two low crossbars across the bed rails. They sit below the cab roofline, add little drag, work with most tonneau covers and cost less. For bikes, kayaks, a rooftop tent, a cargo basket and everyday cargo, they're the better fit for most trucks.
A full bed rack adds taller uprights and side and top braces. That height and bracing is what you want for an awning, MOLLE panels, fuel and water cans and lights, or for running a rooftop tent high with room for cargo underneath, and it comes at a higher price and a taller profile.

- Toyota Tundra bed bars: 2000–2006, 2007–2021 and 2022–2026
- Ford F-150 bed bars: 2004–2008, 2009–2014, 2015–2020 and 2021+

Each step uses parts sold on their own, so you only buy what that step needs. Your XBRS corner brackets and bed rail brackets stay on the truck the whole way, and every XBRS product page walks through the parts for that truck.
Start: XBRS low-profile cross bars
Crossbars 6" (6H) or 8" (8H) tall on CNC-machined corner brackets, with Universal or Retrax XR mounts on most trucks. Rated 1,500 lb static, 800 lb on-road and 400 lb off-road.
Step 1: Upgrade XBRS to an XTR1 bed rack
- The XTR1 Alternate Height Kit for your truck. Choose the "XTR1 Alternate Height Kit" option, a rack height from 10" to 26", and Wide Width for the Universal Mount or Retrax for the Retrax XR mount.
- Two XTR1 Side/Top Brace Sets, sized to your bed length.
- Four XTR Off-Road Reinforcement Plates (20°, or 9° for the Jeep Gladiator).
The kit replaces all of the XBRS bars and raises the rack to your chosen height. XBRS bar lengths vary, so we don't offer a part that reuses the old bars. A standard XTR1 is rated 1,550 lb static, 850 lb on-road and 450 lb off-road.

Step 2: Convert XTR1 to an XTR3
An XTR3 adds a third crossbar and a third upright on each side.
- The XTR1 to XTR3 Conversion option on the same kit page, with the same bracket type and rack height as your XTR1. It includes one crossbar, two uprights, two corner brackets and the bed rail hardware.
- Side/top braces: cut and tap your XTR1 braces to fit, or order XTR3 Side/Top Brace Sets in the same length.
- Four more XTR Off-Road Reinforcement Plates, since an XTR3 uses eight.
A standard XTR3 is rated 1,750 lb static, 850 lb on-road and 500 lb off-road. Compare finished racks in our XTR1 bed racks and XTR3 bed racks.
